I am terminally juvenile!
I think this blog is the right one to receive my latest project!
My recent project Picture This!: Algorithmic film assembly using toy gestures
What is it? A new input device embedded in children’s toys for video composition.
A new form of interaction for children’s capturing of storytelling with physical artifacts.
What does it do? Children craft videos with and about character toys as the system analyzes their gestures and play patterns. As they play with the toys, they conduct film assembly.
Research in human computer interaction I propose a new genre of Gesture Object Interfaces. It relies on the analysis of gestures coupled with objects to represent bits.
Research project I created at the MIT Media Laboratory at the Tangible Media Group with my adviser Dr. Hiroshi Ishii.

Interactive Toy Vending Machine
Capsule toy vending machine, commonly called "gacha-gacha" in Japan, was introduced to Japan in 1960's and became very popular. Nowadays many kinds of capsuled toys are sold not only to children but also to young or elderly people.
Existing capsule vending machines just give capsuled toys. The authors of this work propose a new platform that enables customers in front of a vending machine to play with toys and the machine. The machine presents a worldview and stories of toys, and invite for interacting with them.
This project is a cooperative research project between Kentaro Fukuchi (The University of Electro-Communications), Kaori Enomoto, Yu Izawa, Fusako Kusunoki and Hideki Kaji (Tama Art University).

A relaxing moment for passerby

What a nice way to take a break from work! One can crawl inside of a white trailer and appears on the other side of the street. I am sure one can run user studies to show how relaxing this is. This might not work well after shopping as there are no shopping bag hangers available. Open, available, and offered to passersby, the trailer is parked on downtown thoroughfares of the red light district.

Eco friendly toys
Theme Magazine presents the Plantoys-toys are simple, constructive and ... made of wood. A real come back to our grand parents' toys. I like the magazine's thoughts on toys: toys used to be for kids, but now you’ve got people well into their thirties playing X-Box and Gameboy. Toy companies have sadly taken a cue from our extended adolescences by releasing bewildering children’s toys that often look more like adult accoutrements in primary colors: Baby’s first cell phone! Baby’s first DVD player! Baby’s first digital camera! The buttons are bigger, so it’s for kids! In contrast, Thailand’s PlanToys is a calming oasis in this cacophony of wires and plastic. Its return to toy basics—educational, functional and beautiful—is a welcome departure from the general trend of the complicated and disposable. And their toys are actually made of, get this, wood. Not just any wood, but wood from rubber trees that have ceased to yield latex and would normally be destroyed.
